There are singers we grow up with, Jagjit Singh and his wife Late Chitra Singh were the singers I grew up with. My eldest sister was a big fan of this fantastic singer, so she used to hear them all the time, in good old tape-recorders, and I became fond of Jagjit Singh’s voice, it took me some time to admire Chitra Singh’s voice, I still rather love the Jagjit Singh’s voice. Quite interesting, I just came to know that Chitra Singh was a Bengali, born Chitra Dutta. Anyways, these two sang together from 1967, married each other in 1969 but their fame came in 1976. Because they were brave enough to walk in a path dominated by urdu speaking people, the world of ghazal, and people like me will humbly say that though Jagjit-Chitra’s songs were called ghazal but in fact they were modern songs, geet. If you knew Urdu and Hindi and have checked out ghazals and the songs by Singhs you would have agreed with me, that though their songs were gems but they really did not fitted to the category of ghazals. Well, I am not the only one who says that, critiques have been saying it from the very beginning and I agree with them.
The songs this couple have sung for us are on one hand excellently performed on the other hand they had very best lyrics, believe me! Their depth is amazing! Just love them! To love their songs you will have to understand it, so you can try reading their lyrics in English first, then if you want you can hear their songs. Only two of my hot favorite song by this couple are “Ye daulat bhee le lo” and “Ajnabi shahar ke ajnabi raaste”- there are singers and there are singers! This couple fits in the latter category.
There is not much to say about it, I think in this series I will just open their pages in internet, pick up the things that I have loved about them and share them with you. At the end mention the site which gave me the information.
