Darren Vandell left his office, alone, late at night, on strange business.
He was given an odd piece of stone to examine, away from his lab where most of his work was done.
He was in the business of trafficking in contraband: sentient computer chips with neural network intelligences from a high-silicon volcanic world, a world just cooling from the fires of planetary formation.
His business was illegal, considered ethically questionable at best, but his services were needed in a star system where computers were forbidden by law He worries about the legal consequences if caught. Since the machine uprising several decades ago, all digital data-processing devices were destroyed and forbidden upon pain of death or solitary confinement. So he worked as a geologist, and one with a low profile in his work: security through obscurity.
Just last night he received a call from a wealthy patron, one who would like very much to not be identified by name, but instead by key numbers translated into a string of letters, a sort of coding mnemonic using a complex cipher.
This night, as he left, he wondered what would happen. Little did he notice the
shadow trailing him as he turned the corner of his office building. A “click” suddenly echoed in the otherwise silent night. As he turned to look, he saw for an instant the glint of street lights on metal before his world went dark.
